Lesson Overview
This watercolor painting and poem introduces 5th graders to the idea of non-objectivity. Students are asked to identify various objects and symbols. We pose the question, "How would someone create a painting without and recognizable symbols or objects?" Students are asked to describe the work contemporary artists Lynne Taetzsch,
Robert Delaunay, and Mark Rothko.
Student's achieve non-objectivity by painting using art elements color, line, and shape. Student's explore different color schemes and color theory. Student's discuss the feelings and emotions associated with each color. We discuss the different parts of a poem and how they work together. Student's are required to create an original non-objective watercolor painting along with a poem describing the emotion and feelings of their painting.
Planning and Ideation:
5th grade students begin by planning their painting by selecting a color scheme and three colors. Students explore watercolor painting techniques using table salt, tape, dry brush, wet on wet, monochromatic value, rubbing alcohol, straw blowing, splatter, wet on dry, and saran wrap.

Critical Reflection:
Students are required to take a photograph of their work and upload it to their personal digital portfolio. Student's type a short artists statement including things learned, things they like about their work, and one thing they would change or do differently if they did it again. This response is uploaded to their portfolio via Seesaw. All student's present their work in a poetry reading. After each poem and painting is presented student's field questions and comments on their work. We enjoyed each others hard with hot chocolate and tea during the readings.
